High School Leaders Rocked Hume, San Diego

IMG_3009This fantastic group of high school leaders accompanied our high school students to summer camp at Hume Lake, San Diego. You might think, summer camp in San Diego, that sounds like a vacation! Trust me, going to camp with 30 high school students is no vacation! Fun yes, vacation no! These adults invest a lot of time into our students over the week through play, prayer, dodgeball, mohawks, deep conversations and food. Many of them take a weeks vacation with or without pay to hang and develop relationships with our high school students! So when you see them in the halls, make sure to thank them! Thanks for all your hard work and sleepless nights Ben, Kristin, Darcie, Sarah, Justin, Anthony, Jon, and Victor! You all are awesome!

Powerful Night

IMG_3056 I got the opportunity to fly down to San Diego to hang with the high school kids at their summer camp and then drive them home.  I experienced the last night of camp with the last chapel and then a sharing time at the Pantheon.  It was powerful to hear what God had done in a lot of students lives as well as in the lives of our own students.  I don't think I've ever been to a Hume sharing time where it lasted so long.  Not that it was too long, but so many students shared!  Awesome night.

High School Students @ Hume San Diego

6a00e5517be9e1883300e55384062c8833-800wi Our high school director and volunteer staff have been keeping the high school blog updated with their adventures of high school summer camp. Spirit day was yesterday and our high school guys got into spirit with pink mohawks! I think what I love about this picture is some of our guys really do have mohawks and some of our guys have a pink stripe down their head for a "fo-hawk." The other thing I love about this picture is our guys doing something together and bonding!

Score!!

Mario_kart_wii_sale_numbers On Thursday I finally scored a Wii for the Jr. High Ministry.  It took me 6 months to find one for our High School Ministry and 8 months to find one for Jr. High! I walked into Costco and BAM! There it was a Wii! We've also been on the hunt for Mario Kart for several months.  No where to be found!  BAM! Went to Best Buy and they had them!  I can't wait to try Mario Kart out!

What's Wrong With This Pic?

Dsc03601At our high school grad dinner last night we realized that something was wrong with this cake! Can you catch it?

Fun Night With Our Seniors

Dsc03604_3We had our Senior Grad Dinner last night with our seniors, their parents and our high school leaders. We had a fun night eating way to many Chevy's chips, dough, and wonderful food! It was fun just spending some concentrating time. These seniors will be missed. They have been doing what seniors are supposed to do, leading by example. They have been the one's reaching out to new people, reaching out to our under classmen as well as bringing their friends. When I was signing their Bibles I realized that Krysten and Elizebeth had brought 8 out of the 16 seniors we have in our class! So I will not only miss them but I will miss their leadership! Congrats class of 2008!

Hanging with the High Schoolers

Img_0304Img_0305Last night we celebrated our all our small groups together due to the suggestion of a couple of students! Thanks Emma and Kerri, it was an awesome idea. It was a fun night filled with music from some of the guys in our band! Forrest, Brett and Scott, you guys sounded great! Our High School Director, was queing it up on the BBQ, watch out for those flames Ben! And the rest of our leaders were hanging out with their small groups. Special thanks go out to all our leaders who are so faithful to our high school students. We couldn't have small groups without you! I also want to thank all our high school students, who though they are sooooo busy, stay committed to their group as well as deepening their faith.

Meet Me In St. Louis

Dsc03579Last night I headed down to the Kings Academy to see a bunch of our students in the play, "Meet Me In St. Louis." Kings always does a fantastic job with their drama department and I thought the students did a fantastic job performing! It was so much fun watching Hannah and Sarah, who have been a part of the drama program since Jr. High, take lead roles! You girls did awesome. Two of our Jr. Highers were in the play as well! Isabella and Kate were wonderful! I can't forget the tech crew either because another one of our Jr. Highers, Nathaniel, did a fabulous job with lighting! I wish I had pictures with all of you last night, but only got one! :(

Guest Blogger, Paul Cornell writes about his experience on the High School LA Missions Trip

100_0070Paul Cornell has been a long time leader in the High School Ministry. He is a guy who I have a ton of respect and admiration for, so I was excited when he said he would write his very first blog post!

"We had six days with Center for Student Missions in Los Angeles, an organization that provides urban mission experiences that honor Jesus Christ. As a group we sorted food at the L.A Food Bank, prepared food at Project Angel Food, spent three afternoons at the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood where we played, helped with homework, and did art projects with children. We spent a morning with a woman named Sister Luz whom I had worked with on a past trip in 1996. She is 65 and has been serving Christ in L.A and the skid row area for 28 years. She does street church and then gives out food. We were to sing some songs and give a message and then help pass out food. Sister Luz instructions to us were, "this is not a time to be timid, sing and speak boldly in the name of Jesus Christ." We served food at the Midnight Mission
on skid row as well. One morning we split up into three group and took a homeless person to breakfast and spent an afternoon at a convalescent home. Our last night was spent at the beach for dinner and our last study on the Beatitudes. Bible studies had been taught on Matt 5:3 - Blessed are the poor in spirit, 5:7 - Blessed are the merciful, 5:8 - Blessed are the pure in heart and 5:9 - Blessed are the peace makers, which were all excellent. Some of our upper-classmen led our devotion time. Now came the time for affirmation which is a very powerful, emotional time. We sat on the beach sharing and I know we were all thinking about what God had shown us during this fast paced week. I kept thinking about Sister Luz , an amazing woman, who has probably gotten more about serving our Lord then I'll ever know in a lifetime. These amazing
students never stopped serving, encouraging or doing whatever was asked of them and I've been sitting at this computer trying to put into words how special they all are to me and how they have blessed my life and I don't have the words. All week they imitated Christ's humility in Philippians 2:1-2, "If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose." All week long God once again showed me how blessed I am, my prayer is that I act like it."
